The Firm Update

Congratulations to our colleague Derek Landis for passing the CFP® exam this past July!  The CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ exam is rigorous and represents a major milestone in the process of attaining the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional designation.  To receive this designation, there are four requirements that must be completed throughout the certification process.  These requirements include:

  • Education
  • Exam
  • Experience
  • Ethics

Prior to being able to sit for the CFP® exam, Derek completed his education requirement.  The coursework involved within the education requirement consists of seven courses.  These courses are:

  • General Financial Planning Principles, Professional Conduct, and Regulation
  • Risk Management, Insurance, and Employee Benefits Planning
  • Investment Planning
  • Tax Planning
  • Retirement Savings and Income Planning
  • Estate Planning
  • Financial Plan Development

In March of this year, Derek completed his coursework through the CFP® Certification Professional Education Program offered by the College For Financial Planning® – a Kaplan Company.  Eligibility to take the CFP® exam is based upon the successful completion of this coursework.  Proficiency in the core principles of financial planning plays an integral role in becoming a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.  The second part of the education component is to earn a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university.  Derek received his degree from the University of Sioux Falls in 2018.

After completing the education and exam requirements, a candidate must gain a certain level of experience prior to earning the designation.  Derek accomplished this by working over 4,000 hours as an apprentice directly under a CFP® professional.  Starting in May of 2018, Derek worked diligently and has become an essential part of the Normandy Group team.

Lastly, Derek fulfilled the ethics requirement.  To do this, he must commit to always acting in a fiduciary capacity.  The fiduciary standard is not to be taken lightly.  A fiduciary, by law, must always act in the best interests of the client(s).  In addition to being a fiduciary, Derek must adhere to high ethical and conduct standards.  Derek signed the Ethics Declaration when finalizing his application for CFP® certification.  This demonstrates his commitment to being held to the highest ethical and conduct standards within the financial services industry.  The final step within the ethics requirement is for the CFP® Board to conduct a thorough background check and apply the results of this background check to the Fitness Standards of the CFP® Board.  Derek completed this last step with no issues.

Here at The Normandy Group, we are proud to welcome Derek into the ranks of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals.  He demonstrated the discipline and knowledge it takes to earn the privilege of using the CFP® marks.  CFP® certification represents the standard of excellence in financial planning.  Derek Landis and The Normandy Group team are ready to be of service for your financial planning needs for years to come.
